Time to open a new chapter

We believe that planning needs to be rethought, and we want to find out what is already possible today.

Making planning more efficient and better is something that should really be a matter of some urgency. But while we are all busy dealing with circumstances as they are, the demands of everyday work leave little time to truly address the issue.

Imagine you are responsible for building a new school and discover during the process that a better result could have been achieved two streets away at half the cost by intelligently repurposing an old commercial unit.

And what happens if the requirements for the school have changed ten years from now? To what extent can the building, once completed, be adapted flexibly? Or perhaps extended on the existing site? Why was this not examined during the planning phase? How many options and scenarios can be explored before time and budget run out? And why does the approval process take so long when compliance with regulations and rules should, in principle, be possible to calculate algorithmically?

Can AI do architecture?

In 2023, we began searching for new digital planning tools designed to make our work easier. What we found was a new realm of possibilities that will fundamentally shape how we work and plan in the future.

For anyone who does not want to be left behind: it is high time to devote an hour or two to the subject of AI.

For students

AI will not do your work for you. AI will assist you. And to use this new technology productively, it is essential to develop critical thinking skills.

• AI does not generate architectural concepts on its own; it supports planning processes. It can help create planning documents and assist in handling complex information.
• Planning remains communication: decisions emerge between clients, users and places. AI cannot replace these relationships; it can only complement them.
• This is not simply about “operating” new digital tools. It is about learning to think with purpose and practising how to formulate precise tasks.

For architects

There is more to say about applying artificial intelligence in everyday planning, and about the countless new digital tools we have been continuously tracking and testing since late 2023, than can be covered on a website. A link to our research is provided below.
